DIY: simple chic wall art

i am a sucker for a good piece of wall art. but, i am also super picky and don't like random insignificant things hanging all over my walls at home. if it's in my house, it means something to me, which is why i love this next idea. it is so simple and can be personalized to whatever you like. a simple canvas piece with a quote, or name, or saying, or whatever and it looks amazing all finished up!

see all the instructions after the jump!

to make this you will need:
canvas in the size of your choosing - i went for 12 x 24
wooden letters
hot glue gun
spray paint - i used white but you can do whatever strikes your fancy.

first - before you do anything - you need to decide what you want your canvas to say. i chose "i carry your heart" because it is a line from my favorite poem by e.e. cummings - and my sister read it at our wedding. i love it for its simplicity. you want to be sure you have all the letters you need for your project AND that it all fits properly on the canvas that you choose. so don't leave the craft store until you laid it all out and made double sure it looks the way you want it to.

once you have picked your saying, list, line, lyric, whatever - you are ready to get going. lay it all out the way you want on your canvas and decide on spacing before you start glueing. i find its better to do this on a lower table or surface because you can see how straight - or crooked - your letters are as you go when you are more above the project.

once it's laid out, get the glue gun going and attach each letter. i tend to start at the bottom and work my way up, but whatever works for you is cool with me! once your saying is all glued down, let the project dry for about an hour - just to be sure.

when you are ready to paint - take the whole thing outside somewhere that is well ventilated and won't be ruined by spray paint potentially caught in the wind. lay down your newspaper and place the canvas on top.

spray paint the entire project from every angle possible to be sure you have coated every bit. this may take a few coats depending on the color you choose.

once it is all painted - leave it in the sun for a few hours to dry completely. then hang in your favorite spot and admire your awesome handy work!

what saying would you put on yours? leave some love in the comments and let me know how it turned out :)
